The GEICO Claims Technology department is seeking a highly motivated Sr Software Engineering Manager to lead the Platform DevOps engineering team(s) to support the build of new features and improved performance for our internal and customer-facing claims systems. Candidates must have excellent technical, problem-solving and communication skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong development background, DevSecOps, Infrastructure, Continuous Delivery/Deployment, CICD. Candidates must be able to lead all technical aspects of a project, including technical design, development, infrastructure, and production support. Candidates will actively participate in performance management for their staff, including goal setting, coaching, and evaluations.

Position Description

Our Sr. Manager, Software Engineering DevOps, provides leadership to two to four teams led by a Software Engineering Manager and comprising of four to eight team members. You are accountable for the deliverables assigned to your group and will drive the activities necessary to meet those deliverables. You will be responsible for planning, budgeting, and organizing the activities of the section. While your Software Engineer Managers have responsibility for their teams, you have a role to play in ensuring group performance. You will, at times, deal directly with associates. Impactful coaching and mentoring will be important aspects of your role. As a Sr. Manager, you will ensure that complex IT problems have been addressed by conferring with your customers and IT partners by working to negotiate problem resolution, timelines and deliverable commitments. You will assist and guide your team as they come across challenges and conflicting priorities.

Position Responsibilities

As a Sr. Manager, Software Engineering, Platform DevOps you will:

  • Set the technical vision and direction for your area, ensuring that they are aligned with Claims and GEICO vision, and use that to inspire and motivate your team.

  • Lead multiple team(s) that provide support for core services to the many functional app dev teams in the areas of DevSecOps, Test/Infra Automation, Release Management, Configuration Management, CI/CD & Data.

  • Build a practice that provides centralized support services but enables functional teams to self-service their needs independently in the spirit of shift-left.

  • Build a SRE practice for Claims space to ensure focus on Resiliency & Reliability of current state platform as well as building the standards/tools/practices for future state transformation projects.

  • Work with your stakeholders to address project dependencies, negotiate and estimate incremental delivery dates for milestones with the stakeholder community, and deliver projects on time

  • Identify and raise appropriate project risks, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable solutions or alternatives

  • Report on your team's progress for project and other key metrics, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable ideas for areas to further improve or influence product or project delivery

  • Cultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher levels of achievement

  • Build and maintain relationships with your team members to support an environment of trust

  • Influence those you motivate and coach to be receptive to feedback by cultivating a culture that acknowledges and expects individuals to grow and be accountable as a result of experience gained (growth mindset)

  • Identify where technical or analytical skill gaps put future team deliverables at risk and craft a plan to remediate, consistently challenge team members to share knowledge and learn new technologies

  • Craft and deliver strategic and well-structured persuasive arguments to drive projects that drive process improvement, enhance cost leadership, and/or customer experience. These are the sources of GEICO's competitive advantage.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in DevSecOps & Platform Engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience working as an engineering leader in fast-paced Agile environments

  • 4+ years and leading multiple teams to deliver various platform level needs such as SRE, Testing, Release Management, Configuration Management and building a shift-left DevOps culture.

  • 4+ years of experience with Cloud Native design practices.

  • 5+ years of hands-on technical leadership in quality engineering, test automation, CI/CD, Cloud infrastructure, etc.

  • Strong experience with implementing Observability for a microservices architecture.

  • Experience in building end to end Platform Observability Dashboards, proactive monitoring & alerting, synthetic monitoring, and Cloud Cost management.

  • Constructing, interpreting, and applying metrics to your work and decision making, able to use those metrics to identify correlation between drivers and results, and using that information to drive prioritization and action

  • Initiative and creativity in solving problems and driving innovation through others

  • Delivery of information in a clear and concise manner appropriate to the audience

  • Embracing ownership of both successes and failures, demonstrating leadership maturity

  • Ability to balance multiple assignments distributed across multiple teams and dependency areas

  • Confidence with decision making

  • Clearly able to see how projects interrelate and have a strategic impact

  • Continued understanding of and growth in emotional intelligence

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep experience with Azure Cloud including Kubernetes, Azure DevOps, Insights, AKS, CosmosDB, Azure SQL.

  • Experience with tools such as Quantum Metrics, Splunk, DynaTrace.

  • 4+ years of experience with coding and scripting using Python, Java, C#, or other languages.

  • Exposure to environments using SAFe to scale Agile

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
